A Brief History of South Park

South Park in Lawrence, KS has a long and colored history. When a group of abolitionists from Massachusetts arrived in Kansas and founded the town, South Park was included in their original town site in 1854. By 1863, a small group of settlers had formed the Lawrence City Band, whose summer concerts continue to this day. Later that same year, William Quantrill led a band of pro-slavery militia into Lawrence, riding through South Park on their way to ransack the town. These days, the park is the site of gatherings of every ilk, from music concerts, art fairs and festivals, to public gatherings, weddings and community events.
